About the Author: Debbie Thornton, article by Susan Marques: When Debbie Thornton has “another blonde moment,” it’s a good thing. “I never felt smart in high school. I just seemed to get by on my ‘cutsiness.’”

After college, Debbie married a golf pro and settled in Alabama. “I did a little catering at the club, although I didn’t really know how to cook. I got a little bit snooty, living that life.” But reality stepped in, and Debbie’s husband lost his job. After seven years of marriage and two children, the couple split up, and Debbie found herself “divorced and poor. I had to learn to cook, because I couldn’t afford to eat out.”

Eventually, Debbie met the man of her dreams. “I was diagnosed with ADD at the age of 38. My husband was constantly amused. He labeled my silly behaviors as ‘blonde moments,’ and he encouraged me to write them down. I’ve learned to laugh at myself.”

Debbie wanted to start a website based on her blonde moments. A friend helped get it going, then they decided to go to the Atlanta Gift Market on a fact-finding trip. “We had no idea how anything worked!” But they asked a lot of questions, and they learned. Debbie’s cousin came up with designs for Blonde Girl pottery. “We decided to do a cookbook, too, and by then, there were three of us. We all gathered our favorite family recipes and I went about the task of translating them from paragraph form to what I call ‘ADD form,’ which is easy step-by-step instructions.” The book, 269 Ways to a Man’s Heart, came out in 2003. “We sold it at the Canton Flea Market and it was a hit! We realized then that we had a real business!”

Debbie eventually bought out the other two blondes and now she’s the sole owner of the company, which features three cookbooks and a variety of “Blonde Moment” products. The items are displayed in over 2000 shops in 48 states with commissioned sales reps selling the products, which frees Debbie to write more cookbooks and come up with more product ideas. Her latest book, Any Blonde Can Do It: Cooking from A to Z with ADD, is chocked full with blonde jokes, and it’s written in Debbie’s ADD format in big, bold, over-40's print.

As her business has grown, so has Debbie. “Two years ago, if I was telling you my story, it would have been all about me. But I’ve become much closer to God through this process.” Her next book will be Anybody Can Cook in a Crockpot: How to Cook Your Way into Heaven. “I’m going to ‘blondicate’ it to the people who have made such a difference in my life.”
